Stop Avelo Movement is Taking Off

Ed. Note: Avelo Airlines has contracted with Trump’s ICE agency to fly deportees out of the country. This echoes the trains that ferried Jews to the concentration camps in Nazi Germany. Avelo has a contract with the City of Salem providing subsidies and other benefits to the airline. Avelo operates out of some 50 cities across the country. Activists are challenging the City Council to address the conflict between Avelo’s relationship with ICE and Salem’s and Oregon’s policies of being a sanctuary city and state.

The Coalition to Stop Avelo May 14, 2025E-Newsletter, Issue #1

We want to connect with activists everywhere, but especially in Detroit, Dallas, Chicago, Wilmington, DE, Mesa, AZ, and Palm Springs.  Please forward this newsletter to your network of allies – both in your own city and across the country.  Join The Coalition Here

By protesting together, everywhere, on the same day, we elevate our anti-Avelo movement from a local news story to a can’t miss national news story.  Do what you’ve been doing… but now let’s do it together! Be safe, be lawful, be loud. Bring signs. Bring friends. Take pics.  The message to Avelo is simple: “Cancel your contract with ICE.”  The message to City Hall is simple: “Stop funding Avelo with local dollars.” The message to travelers is simple: “Boycott Avelo, don’t give them your money.” The message to allies is simple: “Join us. Stand for justice. Fight inhumanity. Thanks for showing up.” And the message to the world is powerful: “We stand for families. We stand for immigration rights. We stand for due process. We stand for all Americans who are feeling scared and vulnerable. We stand against companies that sacrifice people for profit. We stand against blood money and we stand against deals-with-the- devil. We stand against Avelo’s contract with ICE. And we stand together, together, together. We will win this fight! We will force Avelo to cancel its ICE contract.” Protest locally, speak nationally.
Pressure Pressure Pressure City Hall!We have to stop the millions of dollars in local subsidies that support Avelo.  City, county and state dollars are keeping Avelo afloat. This is shameful. Our local dollars should not support Avelo. Not one penny more. Pressure your local officials to immediately review, suspend and terminate the funding that supports Avelo. Some get it – partner with them, support them. But most of our elected officials are still looking the other way.  They pretend they can’t do anything. They say the contracts can’t be altered. They say it’s out of their hands. They say they don’t control federal immigration.   Don’t let them make excuses. If we cut off the flow of local dollars to Avelo, we can stop Avelo’s deportation flights. We have started a toolkit to support local action. Click on the link below, and check back for more info soon.
Send Us Your Logos/Send Us Your Feedback We’re building the Coalition page and we’ll list the names of participating organizations who wish to be named. We know some folks are vulnerable and don’t wish to be named, that’s fine.  For those who wish to be named, email us at info@stopavelo.org. Put “LOGO” in the subject line and we’ll publish all together once we have a critical mass. And, what else should we be hearing? What are we doing right, what can we do better? What do we need to know, what do we need to think about, what do we need to hear?  We’re going a mile a minute and we’re humble enough to know that your feedback can help us. Please email anything and everything you want to share.  Use info@stopavelo.org and put “FEEDBACK” in the subject line.

Finally, thanks for reading. Thanks for sharing. Thanks for the work you’re doing. All of us would rather be sitting on the couch eating cookies – or, at least I’d rather be sitting on the couch eating cookies – but this work matters. We have to act. We have to win. And, I believe, all of us are grateful for each other’s support, solidarity and partnership. Onward.

Thanks for working to restore humanity and dignity in our country.
