The Lane Peace Center invites readers to this year’s peace symposium entitled “Confronting Militarism: Democracy vs. Empire.â€Â The event will take place March 5 from 6-9 p.m. (doors open at 5:30 p.m.) in the Center for Meeting & Learning at Lane Community College.
Presenters and performers at the event include:
Tom Hayden: Civil rights freedom rider, co-founder of Students for a Democratic Society, California legislator for 18 years, current Professor of Legal Studies at Scripps College in Claremont, contributor to The Nation magazine, and author. His most recent book is The Long Sixties: from 1960 to Barack Obama. Hayden’s talk is titled “Mass Movements vs. Machiavellianism†and will focus on forming social movements in a time of war.
Dr. Anita Weiss: Head of the University of Oregon Department of International Studies whose research and travels focus on Pakistan. She will speak about the current situation in Pakistan in the midst of the U.S. War on Terror.
Dr. Gwyn Kirk: Scholar-activist concerned with gender, racial and environmental justice, will address Women and Militarization.
Jim Page: Northwest singer/songwriter/guitarist will perform his brilliant music with lyrics empowered by insight and poetic conscience.
Suggested donation for the symposium is $10 at the door, students free, and no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
A community reception for Tom Hayden, Anita Weiss, Gwyn Kirk, and Jim Page will be held the afternoon of March 5 from 2-3:30 p.m. at Cosmic Pizza in Eugene. All are welcome.
